Inspirational tips

As well as an extreme athlete Jim Rees is also a keynote speaker and executive coach, and he has plenty of proven advice to inspire those who are looking to succeed.

Please read and utilise some of his top tips for training your mind, and being able to recognise lazy or damaging thought patterns, that have become habitual.

Good luck, and remember, we are all ‘Built for Greatness’!

Accentuate the Positive
Trusting your mind is crucial, but lazy or damaging thought patterns that have become habitual will affect the quality of your life. It is important to learn to recognise these negative patterns:

  • Eliminating the positive – I don’t deserve to be successful.
  • Accentuating the negative – I will never get over this failure and it will blight my life forever.
  • Cutting off your nose to spite your face – If I can’t achieve this one goal, I’ll never achieve any of my goals.
  • Looking at the worst case scenario – Every minor setback that I experience makes disaster inevitable.
  • Wishful thinking – If only the circumstances were different, everything would be all right.
  • History repeating itself – If it happened once it’ll happen again, especially if it was something bad or disappointing.

ABC of Success
The ABC of Success (A = Awareness, B = Belief, C = Commitment) can be used as a quick check to ensure that you have everything in place that will enable you to achieve your goals.

Check Out Your Listening Levels
There are five basic levels of listening. Knowing these will help you gauge where you are next time you are having a conversation.

  • Level 1 – Ignoring the speaker
  • Level 2 – Pretending to listen
  • Level 3 – Selective listening
  • Level 4 - Attentive listening
  • Level 5 – empathic listening

These are all self-explanatory and highlight not only that it takes a strong awareness to get to levels 4 and 5, but also that a lot of information can be lost at the lower levels. There are times, of course, when the three lower levels can be very useful, as long as you are aware that you are choosing them for a specific purpose – for example, levels 1-3 to block out anger.

Find Time to Reflect
Spend time having a deeper look at yourself. This will help you to become more aware of the forces that guide you through your life and anything that you need to change.

Keep a journal in which you can note down all the things that happen to you each day. Ask yourself:

  • What makes you happy?
  • What winds you up to the point where you lose control?
  • What is the person inside your head saying? What type of things do you worry about?
  • What are you afraid of?
  • What assumptions do you find yourself making about yourself and others?

Tip: Remember that the limiting beliefs that you have about yourself are just as harmful as those you have about other people.

Winners never quit and quitters never win.

Tip: Every day, try to do one thing that you are worried about not being able to do properly. When you succeed, your confidence will get a boost.

Visualise success in order to succeed.
